Journey to the Edge tells a story with music, of a mission to reach the edge of the universe, which was discovered in the year 2211. The Captain discovers, during the mission, that he will die in 76 light-years.
The first time I listened to this album all the way through was when I was developing some black and white photos for my photography class. Being in a dark room for 4 - 5 hours alone, with nothing but the photos, can be a blessing or a curse. Sometimes I enjoyed the silence, other times I needed some motivation to keep going.
During the alternative processing assignment, I decided to listen to my iPod. I thought now was as good a time as any to listen to the latest submission to Streams-of-Time: Journey to the Edge. I found the album mostly relaxing, except for a few tracks. I believe that listening to the album in the dark room, while developing some great work, allowed me to enjoy the album even more because it was dark, I was alone, and it inspired me to be creative.
The album opens with an upbeat 7 minute intro, with sci-fi style vocals setting the stage for the story. I found the following tacks to my favorite: (4) Purple Element and (5) Earth Mirage because, because they paint hypnotic pictures, and (7) Approach to M42 because it is an captivating upbeat and edgy mix.
Out of the entire album I would have to say that (8) Atomic State had promise, but was ruined with the opening (a baby laughing) and the ending (children playing). The track is supposed to give the listener an idea of what is going on in the Captain's mind, since he knows he will soon die. Maybe the baby and children were supposed to be flashbacks or memories... but if they were left out, the track would have been a great closing.
Journey to the Edge is a hypnotic interstellar story that takes you through space and time, and it receives Streams-of-Time's above average rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I'm looking forward to reviewing the prequel and sequel of Journey to the Edge.
