Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection

The Harp is widely considered to be one of the, if not the, oldest musical instrument... With possible origins in the Neolithic Age.

Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection brings together thirteen of the world's outstanding Harpists. Ranging from traditional Celtic Harpist and long time Chieftains member, Derek Bell; to Electroacoustic Harpist, Andreas Vollenweider... This collection includes many of the various forms of Harp used around the world, including: Celtic; Neo-Celtic; Latin American; Pedal; Concert; and Electroacoustic. Each type of Harp has a distinctive sound that has evolved over time to compliment the music genre for which it is used. Needless to say... Many of the artists on this CD play Harps that were specially designed and built for them.

This CD was produced in conjunction with a Television Special that was aired by PBS several years ago. I am particularly fond of Harp and enjoy this album immensely. And while I'm only familiar with four of the artists, from other CDs... All of the works are expertly performed and make for wonderful listening. There are, however, a few pieces which I would single out as favorites. These being... Jardin des Roses; Planxty Cruit; Cabello Viejo; and Wanja the Wanderer.

For Harp lovers, or those looking for something out of the ordinary to expand their musical experience... Harpestry: A Contemporary Collection, makes an excellent addition.
